May 2008

A FEW NOTES FROM OUR STAFF

As most of you are aware we are completing our spring cleanups and have begun mowing as well as edging and mulching your beds.

This year we are offering two different mulches, Pine bark mulch and Premium Hemlock mulch.  As you know pine bark mulch looses color fairly quickly where as the hemlock mulch will retain its reddish brown color longer.  Call Pat she can fill you in on pricing and scheduling.

Our Fertilization division will have put down your pre-emergent weed control by now and the first applications of fertilizer will begin to take place.

It’s time for planting of annuals, cutting back and dividing your ornamental grasses, as well as cleaning up those perennials. We will be out in full force trying to getting these things off your list, if you haven’t already requested that we help you with these things. Just give us a call. We always plan to have these items accomplished by Memorial Day.

FUN TO GROW

Looking for a perennial that will just keep on giving?  Back in January, the Perennial Plant Association named Geranium ‘Rozanne’ as Perennial of the Year.  It was discovered in 1989 as a naturally occurring hybrid in the garden of Donald and Rozanne Waterer in Somerset, England.  It has large violet-blue flowers with white centers that reach 2” or more, quite large for a Cranesbill.  But it wasn’t chosen just for that reason.  It is hardy in zones 4-8, blooms from late spring to fall, and has respectable fall color.  It grows about 20” x 24” which makes it an ideal candidate for container planting as well.  Geranium ‘Rozanne’ does best in part shade with moist, well drained soil, but it can tolerate full sun with adequate watering.  Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is a low maintenance plant which suits the way I like to garden!

Remember – May 11th is Mother’s Day!!

DIGGING A HOLE

There were two guys working for the city.  One would dig a hole, he would dig, dig, dig, the other would come behind him and fill the hole, fill, fill, fill it.  These two men worked furiously,  one digging a hole, the other filling it up again.

A man was watching from the sidewalk and couldn’t believe how hard these men were working, but couldn’t understand what they were doing.  Finally he had to ask them.

He said to the hole digger, “I appreciate how hard you work, but what are you doing?  You dig a hole and your partner comes behind you and fills it up again1”

The hole digger replied, “Oh yeah, must look funny, but the guy who plants the trees is sick today.”

Notes From The Editor

Hello Everyone!  Spring is definitely in the air and on some days it’s even felt like summer.  Our newsletter has been online all winter and if you’ve missed it you can go online and check out the archives and all the new pictures

I’d like to toot our own horn!  We are on the cover of the New England Construction magazine with an accompanying article – Come in and check it out or go to: click here and click on ‘Recycle at Yale’.  Carlos Torres is on the cover, Leo, Marcelino and Jenaro are also pictured working on site, even Ed is in one doing the hydroseeding.maintenance

We had a very busy winter, what with all the snow we got and all the new incentives we have decided to implement.

Here’s some news! Stoney is back in the fold.  He came back onboard in March and if you haven’t already seen him you’ll being seeing him soon.  For those of you who have never heard of him, he was with us for 15 years and decided to try his own business venture.  Thankfully after 4 years he decided to return – wait till you meet him he’s quite a character.

I’ll get more info about Stoney as soon as he gets a minute to sit down with me for an in-depth interview –
