Mother’s Day!

Notes From The Editor
Hello Everyone!  What was up with that nasty hot weather at the end of April!  Our newsletter has been online all winter with the exception of April and if you have missed it, you can go online and check out the archives and all the new pictures: www.eaquinn.com

I would like to toot our horn once again!  Once again, we are featured in New England Construction magazine – Come in and check it out or go to our website for the link.

A great deal happened here at E.A. Quinn this winter. I know a great many of you will be startled to learn that Pat Dawson is no longer a team member here and we wish her well in whatever endeavor she decides on.

New team members:

Karen Pierson is our Customer Service Manager; she is a ball of energy as I am sure those who have met her already could attest. Karen is a Certified Accredited Nursery Professional; she is the person to call if you are looking to enhance your landscape.

Joan Monty is new in the office and she fits right in, when you call in - say hi.  Joan and I will be working on dividing up the tasks as well as learning them all so that either of us will be able to be of assistance with whatever your needs may be.  We are really pleased she decided to be a part of our team.

From Our Staff
As most of you are aware, spring cleanups are done and the mowing has begun. It is still not to late for edging and mulching your beds.

Again, this year we are offering two different mulches, Pine bark mulch and Premium Hemlock mulch.  As you know pine bark mulch looses color fairly quickly where as the hemlock mulch will retain its reddish brown color longer.  Joe Seybold is the man to call at extension #27 with your order; we have two “Aim & Shoot” trucks on the road so that we can take care of business in a timely fashion.

Our Fertilization division will have put down your pre-emergent weed control by now and the first applications of fertilizer will begin to take place.

It is time for planting of annuals, cutting back and dividing your ornamental grasses, as well as cleaning up those perennials. We will be out in full getting these things off your list, if you have not already requested that we help you with these things. Just give us a call. We always plan to have these items accomplished by Memorial Day.

Fun To Grow
"Perennial Plant of the Year" for 2009.
It is the grass known as golden hakone grass or gold variegated Japanese forest grass resembling a cascading miniature bamboo. This is only the second time a grass has won the honor since the Perennial Plant Association's began selecting plants in 1990. (In 2001, the winner was calamagrostis x acutiflora "Karl Foerster," an ornamental grass.)

To be the plant of the year the plants are judged on how well they respond to a wide range of climate conditions, low maintenance needs, ease of propagation, ornamental interest that spans several seasons, and pest and disease resistance, including that all-important one for Connecticut gardeners: "not favored by deer."

Golden hakone grass, which is native to Honshu Island, Japan, grows to a foot to a foot and a half tall and about 18 to 24 inches wide. The blade-like leaves are bright yellow with slender green stripes, and in the autumn, the golden foliage turns to shades of pink and red.
You can use Golden hakone grass as a ground cover, as a specimen plant at the front of a garden border, in mass plantings or in patio containers, cascading over the edges of a pot like
a waterfall. It looks good with plants that have purple foliage, such as heuchera, astilbe, wild ginger, bleeding heart and lady's mantle.

Golden hakone grass also offers vivid highlights in a shaded area or in an evening garden, it is notable for the way it moves in the breeze, cascading and undulating.

Paver Walks, Patios, Paver or Natural Walls & Fire pits, Lighting & Driveways!

Make your house the place to stay and play this summer. StayCation is still the catchphrase this summer. Parties on your new paver patio, roasting marshmallows, or just enjoying the ambiance of the flickering flames of your fire pit, the low voltage lights strategically placed to highlight the paver walk to all the fun.  You will be the envy of all your neighbors when they look out at the wall framing your property.

With your new paver driveway, you will not have to worry about the time and expense of putting sealer down, or filling in cracks.  The added bonus to any or all of these things is the addition to the resale value of your home.
