See you in the
funny papers

"It's just too hot to wear clothes today," Jack says as he stepped out of the shower, "Honey, what do you think the neighbors would think if I mowed the lawn like this?"

"Probably that I married you for your money," she replied."

Notes From The Editor
E.A. Quinn had a fine winter attending two home shows where we met a great many people some old friends and we made new friends. This month we will be recycling some of the info that went out this winter only in email format. Send us you email address and you too can receive our newsletter all year long, as always any I want input from you. Check out our website: www.eaquinn.com and look at what your neighbors have had done in our gallery of pictures.

Message from Matt

Our spring cleanups are complete other than an odd one here or there, we are completing our first application of fertilizer, bed weed control and our mulch trucks are on the road. Most of you have had your lawns mowed once, we appreciate your patience – because of the unseasonably warm weather things are really growing, and unbelievably we are actually ahead of schedule this year.

MULCH – COCOA MULCH HAZARD

Cocoa mulch, a product sold in Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply, and other garden supply centers, has been found to be a potential health risk for pets.

Cocoa mulch contains theobromine, an ingredient that is used to make all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate, and is toxic to dogs.

The mulch contains 300-1200 mg. of theobromine per ounce, making cocoa mulch one of the strongest concentrations of theobromine a pet is likely to encounter in any chocolate product. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 2 ounces of cocoa bean mulch eaten by a 50-pound dog may cause gastrointestinal upset; about 4.5 ounces, increased heart rate; about 5.3 ounces, seizures; and over 9 ounces, death.

Responsible pet owners should take care in their selection of cocoa mulch brands; some might prefer to choose another form of soil enhancement for their gardens, such as cedar-based products, rather than gamble that their dogs will not be attracted to or harmed by cocoa mulch.

We at E.A. Quinn Landscape recommend using the shredded bark mulch pine or hemlock, which are our standard mulches, rather than dyed, chipped hardwood mulches. The bark mulch, as it breaks down, returns beneficial nutrients to the soil, which feeds the plants. Although many of the dyed mulches desired whether for the red, black or brown coloring, these mulches give only an aesthetic look and no nutrient benefit.
