Did you know?

Only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, John Hancock and Charles Thomson. Most of the rest signed on August 2, but the last signature was not added until 5 years later.

The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.

Betsy Ross was born with a fully formed set of teeth.

Betsy Ross's other contribution to the American Revolution, beside sewing the first American flag, was running a munitions factory in her basement.

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

America Soars Strong And Proud...

From all of us at E.A. Quinn - Have a fun and safe 4th of July

Notes From The Editor
June came in chilly, crisp and beautiful, and then as the month progressed - lets build an ark was a thought. All this rain does play havoc with a landscaper and his schedule, so thank you for your understanding.

For those who know Ed, you know he is somewhat shy – oh yes he is! He received an award and there was or is going to be an article in the Glastonbury Citizen. I will quote what was published in the Glastonbury Chambers – Member News.

“Ed Quinn of E.A. Quinn Landscape Contracting, Inc. won the annual Paul Harris award from the Glastonbury Rotary Club at their meeting in May.  The Paul Harris award is named for the founder of Rotary International.  It is the highest honor given each year to a member of the club who exemplifies the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”  Ed is very deserving of this award and has been a member of the Glastonbury Rotary of 13 years.”

(Shhh – guess who was working on the Home Makeover in Suffield)

From Our Staff
Matt wants you to know that some lawns are showing signs of Red Thread Fungus due to all the rain!  He wants you not to be alarmed, as soon as we get some sun and heat the fertilizer will take care of it, and the lawn will grow out of it.

We may be looking at a bumper crop of mosquitoes!  Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. One tablespoon of water can breed 200 mosquitoes, and as their life cycle is measured in days, they will multiply quickly. Please dump all standing water, flower container bases, anything that will and does hold water.  Make sure that all your gutters drain well. Mosquitoes spread such diseases as malaria, yellow fever, dengue, filariasis, various types of encephalitis, dog heartworm, and West Nile virus to humans and animals.

July and August are generally our hottest and driest months here in Connecticut. As hard as it may be to imagine, those of you that have irrigation systems will definitely be putting those systems to the test during these months. Make sure that you keep your system maintained and running to accommodate the drier months.

These months are also a great time to apply a post emergent weed control. Any weeds that germinated and got past your pre-emergent application need to get a blast of post emergent weed control now. The cool, wet spring we had gave these little devils a lot of nourishment.

Making your yard looking fit and trim is always a top priority during this time of year. Everyone is out enjoying their green space so do not forget, all of the shrubs that have stopped blooming are ready for pruning. Edging the sidewalks is also a quick way to get rid of the straggly look that can start happening now that that we have received so much rain.

You will definitely see our lawn maintenance crews out there making your yard a masterpiece. Edging and pruning are the signs that summer is here and we are out there shaping things up.  If there is something in your yard that needs attention, just call.

A Healthy Yard
To decrease the need for insecticides, select plants that work well with the site’s soil and sun/shade conditions. Plants placed in the conditions that they love will be healthier and less prone to insect or disease invasions.

Scouting for and destroying egg deposits’ is also useful to get to the problem before it hatches. Pest mites thrive on dry conditions, so hose down mite-prone plants like dwarf Alberta spruce if there has been no heavy rain.

A healthy yard is about diversity, balance and wise choices. Plant a wide variety of trees, shrubs and perennials and the insect population will become more balanced and less prone to pest invasion.

Pavers or Concrete Slabs?
Pavers are a perfect solution to that not so beautiful, cracked patio. There are many different pavers and colors to choose from that will compliment your homes décor as well as your individual style and needs.

Maybe you are looking to make a large space look smaller or a small space look inspiring. The choices can improve not only the appearance but also the value of your property.

With interlocking concrete paving stones and landscape retaining wall systems, you can explore many design options for your landscaping projects. Give us a call and we would be happy to come out and give you an estimate.

In Conclusion
There are so many topics to discuss it is difficult to choose which to present. We are trying to make this newsletter informative but also interesting.

The number of plants that are available and that will look wonderful in your yard just boggles the mind.
