Notes From The Editor |
Well July hit us with record rain, high humidity and some incredible thunder and lightening. I don’t understand how our lawn, brick or landscaping crews do it, I have a hard time functioning once it gets over 75 degrees, let alone dealing with the humidity.
If you have something, you would like to contribute, please send your thoughts or ideas to info@eaquinn.com |
From Our Staff |
Matt would like you to consider treating for grubs again, as Japanese beetles return to the soil this month. This will reduce winter mole destruction on your lawn.
Dave wants you to look around your yard for branches that are dying. With all the wind we have been getting with the thunderstorms, many branches have been damaged. You should be able to spot them easily as the leaves will have started to die. He asks that you call so that we can take care of them. He and his crew can prune your trees or shrubs correctly to cut down on any potential damage from high winds.
Matt and Joe want to remind you that beginning in mid-August and continuing through mid-September is the time for seeding. Whether it is over seeding, slit seeding or hydro seeding getting it done during, this period is very important.
After five or six years, grass plants will slow down their reproduction rates; they get tired just like we do as we age. Thin grass invites weeds. There is another benefit – disease resistance. The new varieties of seed you sow this year will have better disease resistance than those varieties already in your lawn.
When lawn renovation is needed, slice seeding or overseeding can often solve the problem quickly, easily and with little mess or bother.
Steve and his crew want to let you know it is not too late to get that walk or patio in before the ground freezes. Call Ed for a free estimate.
Joe says it is not too late to mulch, as you know besides helping to retain moisture (not a problem so far this year), it helps to cut down on weeds and as it decomposes adds nutrients to the soil. In the winter is helps to prevent temperature fluctuations in your planting beds.
If any of these things, you have had in mind feel free to call us for an estimate. |
Plants, Plants & More Plants |
Late summer is a good time to divide perennials. If plants are blooming well, with strong stems, and you still have space for them, they should not need division. Do no make the divisions too small or you will wait longer for blooms. Wait until after they have finished blooming to divide. Trim the foliage by at least half before replanting.
Now is the time to think about bringing in some of the coleus, impatiens or geraniums you have growing in your outside beds. You can bring these in before the first frost and have them around the house all winter. Be sure to check for insects! |
In Conclusion |
The kids will be in school soon, and then the leaves will begin to fly and you all know what comes next! I hope that we will have had an exceptional August – Sunny, Warm, Dry not humid.
