September 2008

A FEW NOTES FROM OUR STAFF
Hydroseeding or overseeding that is the question? Now’s the time for us to come out to overseed, slit seed or utilize our hydro-seeder, which saves time and money as well as putting down an even layer of  beautiful lawn for you.  Cool nights and warmish days combine to have your lawn growing like crazy.

If you need help deciding which will work best for you just call.  For Hydroseeding estimates call Joe at ext. 27 and for Overseeding or Slit seeding estimates call Matt at ext. 23.

Aeration, this will help with root zone growth and it relieves compaction and allows oxygen into the soil. Also, it is time to fertilize that lawn. It needs a little boost to help those roots get off to a good start before winter.  Matt’s the man to talk to at, once again, ext. 23.

Dave, Carlos and Marcellino want you to know this is a good time to evaluate your autumn landscape to see where new plants can be added next spring and summer to provide fall color.  Asters, perennial salvias, and some of the sedums (including the ever popular 'Autumn Joy' an excellent butterfly magnet) or if moist soil and a sunny spot, Helen's Flower (Helenium) cultivars with fall colors of reds, oranges, and yellows, may be just the plant for you.

This is a good time to tackle new projects, such as putting in a new garden path or perennial bed.  Plants added in the fall often get a better head start than those planted in the heat of summer.  Not only are the temperatures cooler, but rainfall is generally more reliable, so the soil doesn't dry out as quickly.

You still will need to water new plantings, of course, but may be spared the task of frequent watering if rainfall is adequate.  In addition, pest populations decline in the fall, so not only will the plants have a better chance of survival, but you won't have to spend much time or expense to control invading insects.

Other activities for September: buy fall mums and ornamental kale for fall color; install rodent guards around fruit trees to prevent girdling; plant garlic; buy spring bulbs such as tulips and daffodils for planting later in the month.

Notes From The Editor

As the editor I would like you to know that I do the newsletter about the second week of the month, so that it can go to our web designer.  She does an excellent job – adding colors and pictures of the flowers or as in last month’s e-newsletter a water breaker.  Oh and let me amend the weather at the end of last month was wet and terribly humid.

FALL CLEANUPS

I know it seemsearly to be thinking about leaves falling all around us, however this was a dry summer and some trees will be feeling the stress and dropping their leaves sooner than later.

Just a thought, if you are not on the list and want to be, all you need to do is call Matt ext. 23.
